2025 is a pivotal year for the future of shipping. The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has set an ambitious strategy for reducing the sector’s greenhouse gas emissions. This strategy set the stage for transformative change across the maritime sector and 2025 will be the year when the details fall into place.
In April, IMO member states convened at the Marine Environment Protection Committee 83 (MEPC 83) to hammer out the details of specific measures in the industry's new Net-Zero Framework that will guide the sector’s decarbonisation in the years to come. This was a pivotal moment for the maritime industry to strengthen its climate commitments and set a clearer course toward a sustainable future. It was also the first time a UN agency set a global price on emissions.
In October, the IMO will host the second extraordinary MEPC session in London, at which member states will make a crucial decision on the adoption of the Net-Zero Framework. While April’s MEPC 83 meeting focused on agreeing on the framework’s content, the extraordinary session will focus on whether it will be formally adopted and enter into force.
Read more below about MEPC and the Net-Zero Framework, including the Getting to Zero Coalition's recent statement calling on member states to support the framework's adoption.
